Crypto capital-gains calculator

Enter your purchases, sales and crypto-to-crypto swaps. The calculator applies the Latvian rules – tax only on disposals for euro, cost basis carried through swaps, FIFO or weighted average, the €1,000 quarterly threshold measured on the gain – and shows the gain, the tax and which declaration each quarter needs.

General information, not tax advice. The calculator applies the 2026 rules for individuals as published by VID and described in our tax guide; it does not know your full situation. Verify before filing, and for anything non-standard get advice first.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to us or to anyone else; it is saved only in this browser so you can come back to it.

Whichever method you use in your first declaration must be kept for at least 10 years (Cabinet Regulation No. 899, para. 82). Choose deliberately.

The rules this calculator applies

  • Tax arises only when crypto is disposed of for euro (or spent on goods and services). Holding is not taxed.
  • Crypto-to-crypto swaps, including into stablecoins, are not taxable events – the acquisition cost of what you gave up carries into what you received.
  • Gain = proceeds − acquisition cost − attributable expenses such as exchange fees.
  • Rate: 25.5% personal income tax on capital gains (2026).
  • If your total gain from capital-asset disposals in a quarter exceeds €1,000, that quarter is declared with the quarterly DK by the 15th of the following month and paid by the 23rd. Otherwise everything goes into one DK for the whole year, filed by 15 January and paid by 23 January.
  • FIFO or weighted average – the method chosen in the first declaration is binding for at least 10 years.
  • Losses from crypto disposals can be set only against gains from crypto disposals.
  • Keep supporting documents for at least 3 years. Purchases you cannot document have a cost basis of zero.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator send my data anywhere?

No. It runs entirely in your browser and stores your entries only in this browser's local storage so you can return to them. Nothing is uploaded.

Is the €1,000 threshold on the gain or on the sale amount?

On the gain. You sum the gains and losses on capital-asset disposals in the quarter and compare that net figure to €1,000 – turnover does not matter. The tax authority's own example has €4,000 of sales producing a €900 net gain, and it goes on the annual DK. A period in which every disposal was at a loss needs no DK at all.

What if I do not have records of an old purchase?

Without documents the acquisition cost is treated as zero, so the entire sale amount becomes taxable gain. The calculator flags this as a shortfall. Reconstructing the history from exchange statements and on-chain data is usually worth the effort.

Can I switch between FIFO and weighted average?

Not freely. The method used in your first declaration must be kept for at least 10 years under Cabinet Regulation No. 899, paragraph 82. The calculator lets you compare both before you commit.

Numbers that need a second pair of eyes?

Undeclared years, lost records, staking and DeFi income, or a quarter that came out larger than expected – these are the situations where advice before filing is cheaper than correction after it.
